Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) showcases the works of three Bainbridge Island student playwrights recently recognized in ACT Theatre’s Young Playwrights Program (YPP) in December 2007. Bainbridge Island students Ari Rallis, Karen Eisenhauer, and Jake Mallove will premiere staged readings of their respective works on January 18. BPA is proud to feature these talented young playwrights in an evening of new and exciting works honoring the accomplishments of our local youth.

The three new plays will be performed by local Bainbridge Island actors -
Kim Failla, Gabe Carbajal, Hannah Crichton, J. P. Giuliotti, Claire Hosterman, and Guy Sidora - and will be directed by Steven Fogell. The Numerator by Ari Rallis is the story of a man obsessed with being a super hero. Karen Eisenhauer’s The Finish Line portrays the struggle of teenage friendship. In Unsuspected Love Jake Mallove explores the perils of dating.

YPP, which was founded under the premise that students benefit from witnessing each other’s work, offers Seattle-area middle and high school students a rigorous and innovative language arts/theatre curriculum based on the art of playwriting. This season, more than 200 students from ten area schools participated in YPP, with each student completing their first draft of a short original play by the end of the ten-week session.

In a December YPP Awards Ceremony, a panel of ACT artistic staff and teaching artists selected outstanding student plays for recognition. BPA’s Artistic Director Steven Fogell was on hand to present awards to three Bainbridge Islanders who were among those distinguished and said, “It was a great night, delightfully presented on the set of The Women and all kinds of local actors, ACT staff and over 200 students were present. All Bainbridge students involved were in attendance and made us all proud.” In addition to those selected to stage their works at BPA, Island student Lena Weber’s piece, A Plastic Affair, a new twist on the life of Barbie, won a coveted spot in the Young Playwright’s Program Festival slated for March 7 at 7:30pm and March 8 at 4pm at ACT Theatre. The Festival runs March 6-8, 2008 .
