In Mel Brooks’ comedy-musical, beleaguered producer Max Bialystock teams up with timorous accountant Leo Bloom in a get-rich-quick scheme to stage the world’s worst show. As opening night draws near, what can go wrong? Find out in the opening production of Bainbridge Performing Arts’ Theatre Season October 9 - 25. THE PRODUCERS is outrageous, hilarious, a teeny bit offensive, off the wall, and the winner of a record 12 Tony Awards.

Based upon his 1968 film, The Producers, which ranked in the Top 20 on the American Film Institute’s list of the Top 100 comedy films of all-time, Brooks’ stage version uses musical conventions to both celebrate and poke endless fun at the theatrical form.

Director Teresa Thuman says THE PRODUCERS offers “satirical elements, biting humor and huge, dynamic musical numbers. With characters spanning a manic, infantile Nazi; a super sexy Swede; a neurotic, repressed accountant; a nymphomaniac old lady; the pretentious yet vacuous temperamental director; and his devoted, effeminate lover…what’s not to love?” While the financial crisis, mortgage sharks, and the revelations of Bernard Madoff offer a contemporary context through which to look at the show, Thuman believes that, at it’s heart, THE PRODUCERS is an “Odd Couple”-like love story.”

THE PRODUCERS AIDS HELPLINE DURING FINAL weekend RUN OF SHOW

Helpline supported BPA with special props for its hilarious run of Mel Brooks’ THE PRODUCERS. In appreciation of this generous loan, and with an understanding of the great need we have to help those who are hungry – especially as we head into winter – patrons of the final weekend performances (October 23 - 25) are invited to bring non-perishable food to the theatre when they come to attend the show. Boxes will be provided. The food bank at Helpline (Fishline) is in particular need of hearty soups, cereal, jams and jellies (no homemade, please) and peanut butter. Thanks for your generosity!
