Pulse-pounding musical theatre
Pay-What-You-Can-Preview: Opening Night Reception: Tickets: 2006-2007 Media Sponsor: Bainbridge Island Review Jekyll & Hyde is a heart-pounding, Broadway award-winning, musical tale of the epic battle between good and evil, based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with the human personality create a murderous counterpart. A true musical theatre phenomenon, Jekyll & Hyde attracted legions of loyal fans even before the show began its smash-hit Broadway run. Opening on Broadway in 1997, Jekyll is the longest-running show in the history of the Plymouth Theatre. BEYOND THE SCRIPT: EXPLORING THE DARK SIDE Our discussion will focus on the relationship of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Victorian milieu in comparison with our own contemporary understanding of the psychological underpinnings of the criminal mind. Why did it fascinate Stevenson’s audience, and why does it still hold such a fascination for us, in our “modern” era. BPA’s first Mainstage BEYOND THE SCRIPT segment explores our ongoing fascination with the dark side of human nature in a conversation moderated by Jekyll & Hyde director Steven Fogell. Jacqueline Helfgott, PhD, will be on hand to explain how the criminal mind was viewed in the past and to discuss criminal psychology as we understand it today. Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Seattle University, her research interests include criminal behavior and psychopathy. Adjuncts to BPA’s 0708 Mainstage series, BEYOND THE SCRIPT discussions are funded in part with a grant from Humanities Washington. Additional dates and topics TBA.
