Under the baton of Julian Gibbons, the Upper Rhine Youth Orchestra performs music by John Williams, Henry Mancini, J.S. Bach, and Percy Grainger and features Thorsten Wollmann’s Concerto for Jazz Trumpet with soloist Dominik Wagner, and Duke Ellington’s Caravan. Bainbridge Island hosts the first U.S. appearance of this ensemble, which has won awards at several international competitions and tours Europe regularly. At the conclusion of the concert, the orchestra will be joined by the Bainbridge High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Kelsey Michie.

Founded in 1985, the Upper Rhine Youth Concert Band developed into a highest level orchestra composed of 55 young musicians with an average age of 18. The musicians come from the entire Upper Rhine Music Federation area, a district comprising some 120 community bands, which stretches along the Rhine.

Julian Gibbons was born in Bournemouth, England, in 1966 and began playing the horn at the age of ten. He studied the French Horn in Germany (Munich and Würzburg) and subsequently at the Basle Conservatory, where he obtained a teaching diploma under Prof. Xiao Ming-Han. His conducting credits include the St. John’s College Orchestra, the Munich University Orchestra (Abaco), the student orchestra ‘Per Tutti’, the Upper Rhine Youth Concert Band and others. He was co founder of the ‘Trirhenum Symphony Orchestra’ in Basle, and founder of the BISYOC Intercultural Youth Orchestral Exchange in England an international music week for young people from all over Europe which has become an annual event. Alongside his busy conducting career Julian continues to play the French Horn in the Basle Sinfonietta and teaches at the music schools of Weil am Rhein and Bad Säckingen.

Advanced purchase is advised for this rare one-night-only United States premiere. Learn more about the BISYOC Intercultural Youth Orchestral Exchange at http://bisyoc.com/php2/bisyoc-entry.php.
