Bainbridge symphony orchestraa musical heritageMusic Director & Conductor David Upham May 16, 2010 Tickets Sponsors Join us May 16th for a fond farewell and an afternoon of joyful listening!Sunday’s joint concert of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra (BIYO) is shaping up to be one of those special “community happenings” that music lovers won’t want to miss! Symphony manager Dick Heine says, “The young musicians do a beautiful job, and the blend with the BSO produces a rich sound.” Immediately following the concert there will be a reception for Music Directors David Upham (BSO) and Reid Blickenstaff (BIYO) to bid them farewell. David has been appointed Lecturer and Orchestra Director at the University of New Hampshire, and Reid has accepted a teaching/conducting position at the Shanghai American School, Pudong Campus, in Shanghai, China. The concert offers a final opportunity to hear the results of their musical contributions and collaboration in our community. Join us for a fond farewell and an afternoon of joyful listening. The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and Music Director David Upham again welcome Music Director Reid Blickenstaff and the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestras for their third annual concert entitled “A Musical Heritage.” This exciting program offers something for everyone – a chance for students to play with the full symphonic winds and percussion, a chance for the adult musicians to give back to the community that supports them, and a chance for everyone to see the vibrant, growing orchestral education program that the BIYO offers. The program will feature many works transcribed from their original forms for keyboard instruments, beginning with Edvard Greig’s Wedding Day at Troldhaugen. The piece is named after the home that Grieg and his wife shared for many years, and is evocative of the festivities of a rustic wedding celebration. The program will then feature BIYO students Evelyn Byer and Katie Gildner as soloists on Richard Meyer’s energetic and rhythmic Bailes para Orquesta (“Dances for Orchestra”). Johannes Brahms wrote a series of Hungarian Dances for piano, transcribing three of them for orchestra. Many other dances have been orchestrated by others. The program will feature a selection of the Hungarian Dances, including the famous Hungarian Dance No.5. The orchestras will then perform a transcription of Ralph Vaughan Williams organ prelude, Rhosymedre. Based on a Welsh hymn tune, the piece is full of flowing melodies and warm harmonies, evocative of the English countryside. The combined orchestras will then tackle the finale of Beethoven’s epic Symphony No.5 in C minor. Best known for its first movement, this piece holds a special place in orchestral canon. From its tense and forceful opening, the symphony develops the same material over the course of its four movements until it finally bursts through in the exuberant and joyful finale which will close the concert.
