Within Les Misérables lies the universal truth “To love another person is to see the face of God”. Originally adapted from Victor Hugo’s timeless novel, Les Misérables (School Edition) has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers, while carefully maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written. BPA’s Camp Teen Broadway production introduces a new generation to the grand and inspirational story that has touched the hearts of millions offering on stage and behind the scenes roles for more than 30 youth, including parts for children as well as teens.

The epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.

Director Steven Fogell describes the legendary musical as powerfully emotive, and he hopes to rekindle the magical and emotional impact wrought by his first viewing of the production more than 15 years ago. Fogell finds the seamless structure of the work most compelling, saying, “the music and words are used a certain way in Act 1 and then repeated by different characters in Act 2 creating an entirely different meaning and emotion. The sheer genius of this production is the simplicity of set and costume contrasting with the grandeur of emotion and audience impact.”

Elated to direct another of his passion projects at BPA, Fogell says “this production’s intellectual and emotional qualities combined with some of my favorite artists, designers, and actors lend pure pleasure to the process. It gathers together talented teens and children from Seattle, Bainbridge, Port Orchard, and Bremerton to create a production of dedication and true passion.”
